BECCS Leadership Summit 2025

November 19-21, 2025
Banff, AB

Building out BECCS: A western Canadian carbon removal industry for global impact

Canada West Foundation and Natural Resources Canada hosted the BECCS Leadership Summit 2025 over three days in Banff, Alberta.

With abundant natural resources and industrial capacity, Western Canada is uniquely positioned to advance the deployment of BioEnergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) at scale – providing one of the lowest-cost, permanent carbon removal solutions globally.

This year’s Summit built on the highly successful 2024 BECCS Leadership Summit. Business leaders, policymakers, Indigenous rights-holders, municipal economic developers, and technical and financial experts gathered for three days of collaborative dialogue and solution-building.

The Summit’s goal was to lay the foundation for a large and impactful BECCS industry in Canada. This includes the domestic use of BECCS CDRs to meet domestic climate goals, as well as establishing Canada as a BECCS CDR export nation.

BECCS also has the capacity to play a significant role in mitigating wildfires in Canada by serving as a market for low-grade, high-risk forest fuels.

BECCS 2025 featured Chatham House dialogue, curated breakout sessions and cross-sectoral panels focused on industry-enabling policy options and scaling infrastructure investment in BECCS projects.

Stay tuned for an upcoming “What We Heard” report, where we’ll share key insights and reflections from the BECCS Leadership Summit 2025.

This year’s Summit was presented by the Canada West Foundation and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), with support from founding partners TorchLight Bioresources, Alberta Forest Products Association, Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and Alberta Innovates.
